Chris Jericho hasn’t a classic match since the CM Punk feud and that legitimately like three years ago at this point which is insane to me. These two were best friends, and now they’re not. Too much ego and only one man can be Universal Champion. After losing to Goldberg at Fastlane, you know Owens is going to wrestle this match with a chip on his shoulder.
Unlike the previous match, these two go at right away. This isn’t about wrestling but settling a feud, so this makes sense. Jericho goes for the Boston Crab right away. He maintains the advantage early and shows more fire than he has in quite some time. Owens slows the pace down and at least tells the ref to “ask him” while holding a chinlock. They head outside and Jericho hits a series of shoulder tackles. That was different. Jericho goes to some of his signature stuff. Superkick puts an end to that comeback. They counter some high risk stuff like Lionsault and swanton bomb. Owens counters into a Walls of Jericho. Cannonball but Jericho drags him out to the middle of the ring and gets the Walls himself. Pop-up powerbomb #1 is hit. Codebreaker counters a second powerbomb. Owens outs one finger on the bottom rope. THAT was tremendous. Powerbomb into the side of the ring. Back inside for a three count.
Pretty great match with a nice series of counters and a good finish. One of Jericho’s best (and probably last great) matches in a long time.
Winner (s)/Rating: NEW United States Champion-Kevin Owens/****
I know it’s a consolation prize, but it’s pretty amazing to me just how many days Owens has held a title since he debuted on NXT. Think about. NXT Championship. Intercontinental Championship. Universal Championship. United States Championship. That’s in the span of about three years. Pretty noteworthy I’d say.
